California Adventure: A First for Ryan

Friday, April 17, 2015

He's growing up. And if his sweet little smile was a little wider, you'd see the "first" he's celebrating written all over his face!

Like most firsts with Ryan, it took me by complete surprise, teetering on a non-event, but at the same time, was enormously impressive. He didn't crawl, one day he just walked. We thought about potty training, he just started going on his own and had a total of 6 accidents (ever.) It was time to start reading, and suddenly I can't spell curse words in front of him any more.

So in the same light, the first lost tooth was something that was on our radar, but not something I thought we were actively working towards. I had made him a tooth fairy pillow for Valentine's Day, but was afraid we were looking at months and months before he used it. Ryan had asked us 3 or 4 times if his tooth was loose, but in all honestly, it didn't seem that loose. (Full disclosure: this opinion is coming from the girl whose teeth would dangle for so long that my mom had to eventually tie them via dental floss to the solid oak exterior door and slam it shut to tear them out for fear that I'd choke on them in my sleep).

So on our first day of vacation when Ryan took a bite of an underripe apple and said it hurt his tooth, I thought, "So it begins." Then the second bite he squealed with delight, "Mom!!! I LOST my tooth." I truly thought he was teasing. But here he was and there the tooth laid in his once pudgy little hands. He was so triumphantly proud. Only then did I realize the adult tooth is already through the surface!

It was fitting that the Easter Bunny showed up that day as well, so there were lots of visitors to our little condo in a 24 hour span. The tooth fairy hauled a "golden dollar" to our door (this after a 4am discovery that she had not come yet and lots of finagling to get her to "appear.") Ry is already at work on tooth number two. Just the first of many California Adventures that we'll share in the days to come.
