Enjoy this post since it's pretty much the last time Elise had a smile on while at the beach. We'll have to see how she weathers Lake Michigan this summer.
As I write this, it's dreary and rainy here in Michigan (though considerably warmer given we had snow on the ground 2 weeks ago and today my pea pods are sprouting.) It's nice to reflect on the perfect family vacation. On the perfect beach. And these pics help me remember it all so clearly. The day started out with the intention of eating breakfast in Cardiff-by-the-sea and then heading to the zoo. Midway down the Coast Highway, my headache morphed into a migraine so we headed back to the condo so i cold rest for a few hours while Max took the kids on a walk through Carlsbad. By lunchtime I was feeling better so we hit the waves.
Elise had a blast building sand castles, but never actually made it into the water. The waves were big and a bit intimidating to her, so she played it safe and hung out with me on the beach sheet. The resort had everything we could think of, including chairs and beach toys you could check out.
After a day at the beach, we headed out to our favorite Mexican joint, Pollos Maria's. The kids LOVED it. So much so that Ryan requested it for every remaining meal out. We sat outside by the fire pits while the kids danced to Mexican Top 40 and Max and I enjoyed the nostalgia of a place we went to constantly when we lived there. We never imagined one day we'd be sitting on the exact same patio, where nothing has changed a all, with our two kiddos. Later we topped it off with Cold Stone which, back in the day, seemed like a unique and unusual treat for Max and I to enjoy while watching karaoke at Coyote.
After dinner we were able to catch the sunset. There was a small wedding just down from us as we took it all in. Where our dinner place hadn't changed, we realized that sunset watching HAD: far less romantic and relaxing with kiddos digging, playing and generally disinterested in the main event.
Ryan woke early to find his golden dollar left by the tooth fairy, so he was a happy kiddo indeed. He spent much of his beach session hitting the waves with a shovel and making new friends (who happened to be 11 and the same size as him.) It was hard for him to remember our warnings about the under-toe but he did his best given his excitement. This kid was made for the beach!
