Day 5 of the trip also marked by my 38th birthday and we greeted my day with a trip to the storied San Diego Zoo (where we met this little guy, humming along on our way out.)
You'll notice in these pics, Elise doesn't look like she had the time of her life. Elise had hit her max. Within the first 10 minutes in the zoo, she gave herself a black eye with the crank of a penny press and that set the tone. Couple that with the same stomach issues that she battles when we're at home and you can imagine her funk. Ice cream helped though.
The more exciting part of the trip for me was meeting up with my former co-worker / roommate, Melanie. And even better, I got to meet her sweet little boy for the very first time. As it always turns out, our kids are generally at their worst when we're around people we NEVER get see. We tried our best to not let it get us down and Mel and her family were super gracious (and got us into the zoo for free! It's $89 per adult!)
Our kids very favorite exhibits were the Snakes (Sorry Auntie K), Polar Bears and Tigers. And truthfully, we didn't see much more thnk that. The place is like the Disney of zoos. It could take 3+ days to see it all.
All in all, the kids had fun and I got to reconnect with Mel so it was worth the effort. Once they conked out on the drive back to the condo, Max and I were even able to drive the coast highway north, get Rubio's and eat a late lunch on the beach.
My little surfer and I took a walk when we got back. He's made for Cali.
Ironically, the lifeguard tower at the end of our old street (where Max and I first kissed) was the same 38 as I turned that day! We ended the day where I always spent my birthdays, Coyote Bar & Grill. Elise danced the night away and we ate by the fire pit. The best black bean salsa ever....just a bit different than years past (add a binkie to the margarita and forget my metallic leather pants.)
